James Hamilton Inglis was born in Ballarat and was a Fitter by trade when he enlisted in the 1-6 (SA) Reinforcements on 8 April 1918 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board SS Gaika on 6 August 1918 and disembarked at London on October 13th. With only three weeks of the war remaining, he was allotted to the 43rd Battalion, then, in early 1919 he was transferred to the Pay Corps. He returned to Australia on the Pakeha, disembarking on November 24th 1919.
