John Thomas Horgan (SN 1756) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 5th 1915. Allotted to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Wiltshire on April 4th and joined his unit at Gallipoli in late May. After just two weeks at Gallipoli, he was withdrawn to hospital. Due to ‘venereal disease’ he was returned to Australia aboard the Ballarat, disembarking on August 6th. In December 1916, at Broadmeadows, he was re-allotted to the 13th General Service Reinforcements with the new service number 61990, but he immediately went ‘illegally absent’ until arrested by Civil Police on September 3rd 1918 in Ballarat. In October he was sentenced to 60 days detention for ‘deserting His Majesty’s service’ then on December 14th 1918 he was discharged ‘services no longer required’.
