Biography

William Robert Humphries (SN 5701) born in Gippsland, was a 24 year old driver when he enlisted at Blackboy Hill WA on June 30th 1915. He embarked from Fremantle for overseas service on October 11th and sailed to Egypt. In April 1916 he crossed to France to serve with the 3rd Division Field Artillery Brigade. Aside from a stint in the Bulford Hospital in England he avoided serious illness or injury although he was charged for being absent without leave on three occasions and for hesitating to obey an order given by a senior NCO. He returned home aboard the City of York, disembarked at Fremantle on February 18th 1919 and was discharged on March 21st.
