Donald Selmon was born in Ballarat and was a Moulder by trade when he enlisted in the 7th General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 15 April 1918 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A74 Marathon on 23 July 1918. In January 1919, after hostilities had ceased, he was deployed to France as a General Service Reinforcement. He returned home on the Suevic.
