George Henry Burridge was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 7th General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 20 April 1918 under the surname of Beale at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A74 Marathon on 23 July 1918. He reached England in late September 1918, but did not join the 7th Battalion in France until early 1919, after fighting had ceased. In March 1919 he transferred to the Pay Corps where he remained until he left England on the Plassy in September 1919.
