Arthur Chandler was born in Creswick and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 7th General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 2 May 1918 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A74 Marathon on 23 July 1918. He disembarked at London on September 27th, and soon after he was attached to the 7th Battalion. He was not moved to France until February 1919, three months after the signing of the Armistice, but his immediate post war service was blemished by several charges of being absent without leave. He returned to Australia on the Suevic, reaching Melbourne on September 10th 1919.
