Louis Henry Vernon was born in Grenville, Victoria, was single and an engineer living at Mair Street, Ballarat, Victoria when he enlisted with the Australian Flying Corps, May 1918 Reinforcement on 9 May 1918 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board SS Zealandic on 5 October 1918. The armistice declaring the end of all major conflict in Europe was signed the following month, on 11 November 1918. Vernon continued his service without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia on 18 December 1919 and receiving his discharge on 19 February 1920.
