John William Barnes (SN 60648) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old dental mechanic when he enlisted in Ballarat on May 17th 1918. He was allotted to the Medical Corps and embarked from Melbourne aboard the Marathon on July 23rd. He reached London in late September but the war ended before he was deployed to the battlefield. He returned to Australia aboard the Konigin Luise, disembarked on February 4th 1920 and was discharged on March 26th. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number V360940.
