Leslie Herbert Gipp was born in Ballarat and was a Fruit Merchant by trade when he enlisted in the 13th General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 9 July 1918 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board SS Zealandic on 5 October 1918 but was hospitalised with mumps en route. By the time he reached England to join the 23rd Battalion, hostilities had ceased and the Armistice had been signed. He returned to Australia on the Ulysses, disembarking in Melbourne on September 2nd 1919.
