Biography

Robert Lloyd Tremain DCM (SN 946/Lt.) was born in Ballarat where he enlisted March 6th 1915. He was an 18 year old typist & stenographer. He joined the 23rd Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne aboard the Euripides in May reaching Gallipoli at the end of August. He reached France in late March 1916 and in early August he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He did fine work reorganizing the company under fire, and in the consolidation of the position won.' On August 26th 1916 he was killed in action at Pozieres, has no known grave, and his name is listed on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Robt. L. Tremain.
