Biography

Garnet Leslie Nightingale, a 32 year old draftsman at the time of his enlistment on the 10th of July 1915, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th of November 1915. On the 12th of October 1916 he was appointed Lance Corporal. He was promoted to Corporal on the 17th of September 1917. On the 31st of January 1918 he was to be the 2nd Lieutenant, and again promoted on the 21st of May 1918 to Lieutenant. On July 4th 1918, Garnet was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to his knee, which fractured his femur severely. Garnet's appointment was terminated in London on the 14th of October 1918 as he was medically unfit for anymore service due to his leg injury. He did not return to Australia after the war as his family resided in England.
