William Jolly (SN 3831) was born in Scotland and was a 22 year old salesman when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 13th 1917. Posted to the 4th Light horse regiment he embarked aboard the Commonwealth on November 2nd and sailed to Egypt. His service there was largely without incident except for when he was listed as missing in May 1918 when he had been admitted to hospital suffering from septicaemia. After the war he returned to Australia aboard the Lancashire, disembarked at Melbourne on March 31st 1919 and was discharged on May 19th.
His brothers Peter and James also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
