John 'Jack' McKay (SN 17637) enlisted in Ballarat at the age of 31 on April 4th 1916. Born in Ararat, he was single and employed as a chemist's storeman. Assigned to the Army Medical Corps, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Suevic in June 1917, and by October was serving with the 6th Field Ambulance in France. His overseas service appears to have been relatively uneventful and he returned to Australia on the Orita, disembarking in October 1919.
His brother Donald also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
