Herbert Stanley Trangmar was born in Coleraine, Victoria, was single and a Bookkeeper when he enlisted with the 22nd Battalion, A Company on 1 April 1915 at the age of 26. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 10 May 1915. He was admitted to the 19th General Hospital for enteric on 11 January 1916, re-joining his unit from sick on/about the 20th of April. He rose through the ranks quickly, achieving the rank of Sergeant on 20 July 1916. In April 1917 he was detached from his unit to attend gun school in France, reporting to A.H.Q. in London on 5 October 1918. On 5 January 1919 he accepted the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He returned home to Australia on 23 September 1919.
