William Edward Marshall (SN 2223) born in Ballarat, was a 25 year old sawyer when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 3rd 1915. He embarked for overseas service on September 27th. In March 1916 he reached France to serve with the 21st Infantry Battalion and was charged with alighting from a train without permission. In August he was wounded when he received a gunshot wound to his right hand. In January 1917 he was transferred to the 6th Machine Gun Battalion but by October he was having health problems due to bronchitis and tachycardia, and it was decided he should return to Australia. He returned on the Persic, disembarked on February 12th 1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on March 16th.
