Born in Ballarat, Evan Marshall was a single 24 year old cook at the time of his enlistment in Adelaide, South Australia on the 14th of December 1915. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A19 Afric on the 9th of June 1916.
On the 31st of July 1917, Evan was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. He rejoined his unit on the 27th of September 1917.
He was wounded in action on a second occasion on the 27th of May 1918 after being gassed. He rejoined his battalion on the 13th of June 1918.
Evan returned to Australia on the 29th of June 1919 and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 14th of August 1919.
