Thomas Halvey was born in Scarsdale VIC and was a Bootmaker by trade when he enlisted in the No 1 Mining Corps on 20 July 1915 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 20 February 1916. During his tour he was wounded twice, gassed in 1917 and later receiving a gunshot wound to the thigh whilst 'standing up having tea against the cookhouse when suddenly he felt a thud in the leg.' He returned to Australia 22 January 1919
He had two brothers who also served: Pte James Hugh Halvey, 5th Pioneer Bn (Tree No 3728), returned to Australia, 12 May 1918 and Private John Halvey, 5th Pioneer Bn (Tree No 3726), returned to Australia, 22 January 1919.
