Biography

Harold Thomas Bell (SN 3650) was born at Creswick and attended Ballarat’s Macarthur Street State School. He was working on the family farm at Walpeup when he enlisted on March 17th 1917 under the pseudonym Harold Wickham, giving his age as 21 and having told his parents he was going to Queensland to seek work as a roustabout. This deception was not discovered until after his death, when his effects were sent to his father. He joined the 4th Light Horse Regiment and embarked from Melbourne in June, reaching Egypt in early August. Little more than two months later, on October 31st , he took part in the famous charge at Beersheba. He was seriously wounded in the charge and died the following day, November 1st 1917. He is buried in the Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel. It was only after his death that it was revealed he was only 16 years of age.

His brother Samuel also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
