Biography

James Thomas Joseph Purtell was born in Bendigo, was single and a Farmer when he enlisted in the General Service Reinforcements on 26 August 1918. However, on Nov. 11, 1918, fighting in World War I came to an end following the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany that called for a ceasefire effective at 11 a.m James was discharged before embarking overseas to Europe upon his own request on termination of war service and defective vision.
