Biography

Victor Billman (SN 10759) from Sebastopol, was born in Ballarat but was a 31 year old clerk in New Zealand when he enlisted at Featherston on March 17th 1916. Assigned to the 1st New Zealand Cyclists Company he embarked from Wellington aboard the Mokoia on May 6th and sailed first to Egypt and then to France in late July. During his service he twice suffered gunshot wounds, in November 1916 and in January 1917. He was evacuated to hospital in England where he was assessed as ‘no longer physically fit for war service’ and returned to New Zealand aboard the Ayrshire. He was discharged on January 21st 1919.
