Biography

Phillip Dorter (772) born at Ballarat, was a 32 year old miner when he enlisted at Blackboy Hill outside Perth on October 31st 1914. In May 1915 he came ashore at Gallipoli to serve with the 16th Infantry Battalion. Within days he was wounded when a bullet fractured his left index finger. He was evacuated first to Malta and then on to England. While in England he developed chronic dysentery and was returned to Australia aboard the Seang Choon. He disembarked on July 21st 1916 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on August 29th.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Phil Dorter.
