Biography

William White MM (SN 4021) born in Auckland New Zealand, was a 21 year old motor mechanic when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 25th1915. Posted to the 7th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ceramic on November 23rd. In April 1916 he reached France where he was wounded twice, wounds to his hand on both occasions, resulting in the amputation of a finger and loss of some hand function. His bravery however had come under notice and earned for him the Military Medal, his citation reading, 'At POZIERES, FRANCE on the night of 18/19th. August No. 4021 Pte W. WHITE shows conspicuous bravery when acting as a runner. When in WALKERS AVENUE we were caught in an intense enemy barrage which knocked out the Machine Gun detachment and compelled the remainder of my party to seek shelter for one half hours in shell holes. Private WHITE went and found out what had become of Machine Gun detachment and came back and reported to me they had been knocked out. He also collected the papers of the dead men. Again, during the time (19/23rd. August) he acted as a runner delivering very important messages and to get these through he had to pass through heavy barrages, also on numerous occasions he, singlehanded guided individuals and parties through barrages although in an exhausted state. He did not cease this work until ordered to do so.' Near the end of the war, he married Phoebe Solomons in London on October 16th1918. At his own request he was discharged in England ‘permanently unfit’ on January 27th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Will White.
