John Veal was born in St Just, England and was a Butcher in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 23rd Battalion, B Company on 26 January 1915 at the age of 35. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 10 May 1915. In November 1916 he joined the 5th Division Engineers in France and served through the war without major incident. After the war he returned to Australia on the Kashmir, disembarking at Melbourne on April 30th 1919.
