Biography

Harold Leslie Smith was born in Ballarat and was a Dairyman by trade when he enlisted in the Army Medical Corps, August 1916 Reinforcements on 3 November 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A49 Seang Choon on 23 September 1916. After four months in England he was moved to France in April 1917 to serve with the 16th Field Ambulance. Aside from several deployments to other units, he served through the remainder of the war without significant incident, and departed England on June 12th 1919 to return home on the Themistocles.
