Henry Brew was born in Ballarat and, according to his enlistment form, an Inspector of Public Books when he enlisted in the Transportation Services aboard the Troopship 'Euripides' on 3 April 1916 at the age of 52 at the rank of Voyage Captain. His task was to accompany troops travelling from Australia to England and then return to Australia with invalids. He completed return voyages in both 1916 and 1917.
