Raymond Arthur William Smith (SN 18731) born near Avoca, was a 21 year old civil servant when he enlisted in Melbourne on April 20th 1917. He embarked aboard the Nestor on November 21st and sailed via Egypt to reach France in April 1918 to serve with the 2nd Field Ambulance. He was slightly wounded in September then in November he was transferred to the Australian Army Provost Corps as the war was ending. He returned to Australia aboard the Pakeha, disembarked at Melbourne on November 24th 1919 and was discharged on January 4th 1920.
