Biography

Herbert John Peart was born in Sebastapol, VIC and was a Printer when he enlisted in the 21st Battalion, D Company on 3 February 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 10 May 1915. While serving with the 21st Battalion in France he was wounded in action on 31 July 1917 with a gunshot wound and was admitted to hospital. He was discharged to duty and rejoined his unit on 1 August 1917, but on 12 October 1917 he was again wounded , this time with a gunshot wound to the chest, and was evacuated to the 6th General Hospital. He would again be hospitalised, this time with trench fever and influenza, on 24 August 1918 before receiving a medical discharge on 12 December 1919.
