Clarence Russell Softley Thompson was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Clerk when he enlisted with the AMC Sea Transport Staff, Section 4 on 31 January 1918 at the age of 23 as a Transport Orderly. His position aboard Hospital Transports resulted in his returning to and re-embarking from Australia throughout his military service, caring for wounded and returning soldiers. Before his discharge on 19 June 1920 he was promoted at least once to the rank of Corporal.
