Wilford William Whittle (Capt.) from Macarthur Street in Ballarat, was a 23 year old permanent soldier based in Fremantle when he enlisted in the 1st A.I.F. on May 21st 1915 at the rank of lieutenant. He embarked aboard the Orsova on July 17th and served predominantly with the 36th Heavy Artillery Brigade. In December 1916 he was wounded, suffering a gunshot wound to his foot, but was able to remain on duty. In November 1918 he was Mentioned in Despatches by General Sir Douglas Haig for his meritorious services during the war. At war’s his commission was terminated in England on February 24th 1919. He served again in WW2 with service number VX85043 and attained the rank of Major General.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Wilfred W. Whittle.
