Born in Ballarat, Stanley Gordon Halford (SN 860) was a single 18 year old farmer at the time of his enlistment on February 2nd 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on May 10th 1915. Transferred to France in August 1916, Stanley was wounded in action, but rejoined his battalion three weeks later. Wounded in action again on November 5th 1916 with a gunshot wound to his right arm, he was evacuated to England for treatment. Upon discharge from the Duchess of Connaught General Red Cross Hospital, he was sent to Command Depot No 2 in Weymouth to continue his recovery and it seems likely that it was here that he met his future wife, Cordelia Barrett. In October 1917, he was again posted to France with the 22nd Battalion. On return to England at the end of the war, he was married in Weymouth, Dorset on March 12th, 1919. He was discharged in London after being demobilised in December 1919 and remained in England with his wife.
