Biography

Eric McLeod Williamson (SN 424) born at Ballarat, was a 23 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 26th 1914. With the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne on October 19th aboard the Benalla. He took part in the historic Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915 but three weeks later he was wounded, suffering a gunshot wound to his arm. He was evacuated to hospital at Malta but was able to rejoin his unit at Gallipoli in July. After the Gallipoli campaign his battalion was moved to France in March 1916. He had been transferred to the 1st Australian Division Train by the time he was granted ‘special 1914 leave’ which saw him return home aboard the Durham. He disembarked at Melbourne on December 23rd 1918 and was discharged on February 21st 1919
