Biography

Alexander Thomas Barr (SN 120) was born in Ballarat and educated at state schools in Ballarat and Koroit. He was a 19-year-old grocer in Koroit when he enlisted on January 8th 1915. On May 28th 1915 he embarked aboard the Persic, allocated to the 13th Light Horse Regiment. Later he was transferred to the 1st Anzac Salvage Company, a unit which did valuable work recovering and recycling used equipment from the battlefields. He was killed in action on 22nd March 1918 near Bailleul and is buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension in France. He was 22 years of age and is remembered on the honour boards of the Humffray Street and Macarthur Street State Schools.
