Biography

George James Dobson (SN 1640) was born in Ballarat but enlisted in Perth on February 6th 1916 where the 40 year old was married to Emily, and employed as a blacksmith’s striker. He joined the 44th Infantry Battalion and left Australia in June on board the Suevic. Posted to France in November, he was admitted to hospital a couple of times in the first few months of 1917, suffering from a cyst in the lower jaw. On August 2nd 1917 he died of wounds received in action during the Third Battle of Ypres, and is buried in Boulogne East Cemetery, France.
