Biography

Edward Ernest Bourne (SN 5554) born at Ballarat, was a married 33 year old printer when he enlisted in Melbourne on April 12th 1916. As a reinforcement for the 23rd Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Shropshire on September 25th. In December he joined his unit in France. In March 1917 he was reported as wounded, but it was subsequently confirmed that he was a prisoner of war at Limburg in Germany. At the war’s end he was repatriated to England, arriving there on December 19th 1918. He returned to Australia aboard the Khyber, disembarked at Melbourne on May 21st 1919 and was discharged on October 20th.
