William Jeremiah Caddell (SN 6786), born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old cabinet maker when he enlisted on February 2nd 1917. He embarked aboard the Ascanius on May 11th and sailed to England. During his early days in England he was charged with being absent without leave for several days. In November he crossed to France where he joined the 23rd Infantry Battalion. Aside from a brief period of illness his service was uneventful until August 1918 when he was withdrawn to England where he was assessed as having ‘defective vision’. He departed England on December 4th aboard the Somerset, disembarked at Melbourne on January 15th 1919 and was discharged two weeks later.
He also served during World War 2.
