Herbert Victor Prout, Ballarat-born Carter, enlisted as a Private on16th October 1916 as a 32 year old with the 40th Battalion 6th Reinforcements. On the 28th February 1918 Private Beaton embarked from Melbourne on board the SS Orsova.

On the 10th of October 1917 Private Prout received gun shot wounds in the chest in the Ypres Sector. He returned to Australia on the 15th of February 1918.
