James Turner was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Barman when he enlisted with the 22nd Battalion, A Company on 5 February 1915 at the age of 43. He embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 10 May 1915. He was admitted to hospital for rheumatism on 13 December 1915 and received a medical discharge in July 1916.
