Biography

Charles Frances Saunders (SN 6340) was born in Warrenheip and educated at the Warrenheip State School. An 18 year old farm labourer when he enlisted on March 18th 1916, he trained with the 14th Depot Battalion in Ballarat before being posted to the 8th Infantry Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne aboard the Euripides in September and reached England six weeks later. After two months of further training in England he crossed to France on Christmas Eve 1916. He was killed in action during the Battle of Menin Road at Ypres in Belgium on September 20th 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium.

His brother Ernest also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
