Walter Renkin was born in Sebastapol, VIC, was single and working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, D Company on 11 February 1915 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 10 May 1915. His records show that he returned to Australia aboard the Themistocles on 9 September 1915 but do not indicate why his stay was so short, other than he received a medical discharge on 12 January 1916.
