William Alexander Sloss was born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, was married to Mrs. Bernice A Sloss of Sturt Street, Ballarat and was a Medical Practitioner when he enlisted with the Medical Officers Unit on 5 January 1916 at the age of 43. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A29 Suevic. His stay was short; by 11 March 1916 it was advised he would return to Australia, his appointment terminated on 1 April 1916 with the honorary rank of Major (Reserves).
