Samuel Gordon Spittle (SN 8005) born in Creswick, was a 23 year old farmer when he enlisted in on August 7th 1915. He embarked aboard the Bakara on November 8th. In June 1916 he reached France to serve initially as a driver with the 5th Division Train before being transferred to the 18th Company Australian Service Corps. Early in his service he had some discipline issues but he avoided battle wounds and the highlight of his service was the award of the Military Medal for his actions at Aubigny and Roisel in September 1918.He returned to Australia aboard the Devanha, disembarked at Melbourne on June 23rd 1919 and was discharged on August 15th.
