Harry Smerdon Holmes (SN 7983) born at Ascot near Ballarat, was an 18 year old farmer when he enlisted at Ballarat on August 9th 1915. On November 5th he embarked aboard the Bakara and sailed to Egypt. In June 1916 he moved on to France where he served with the 18th Company Australian Service Corps. He served through the war without any record of significant illness or injury and returned home after the war aboard the Devanha. He disembarked at Melbourne on June 23rd 1919 and was discharged on August 15th.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Henry Smerdon Holmes.
