Biography

Alfred Albert, born in Warracknabeal, was a single labourer who enlisted on March 28th 1916 at the age of 31. He was listed as a Private for the 39th Battalion which embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on May 27th 1916. On November 20th 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal, and then promoted again to Corporal on March 30th 1917. On June 21st Alfred was wounded accidentally in the field with a shrapnel wound to his buttock. Shortly after his recovery he was wounded again on August 11th 1917 with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was transferred to England and soon after on December 20th 1917 he embarked from England to return to Australia. He was discharged as medically unfit on the 3rd of June 1918.
