Alfred August Edward Albert (SN 4) born at Warracknabeal, was a 31 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ararat on March 28th 1916. Assigned to the 39th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Ascanius on May 27th and sailed to England. In November he crossed to the battlefields of France. He was able to avoid wounds caused by the enemy but in June 1917 he suffered an accidental gunshot wound to his pelvis. He was evacuated to hospital in England where it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He returned home aboard the Runic, disembarked at Melbourne on February 13th 1918 and was discharged medically unfit on June 3rd.
