Edward James Eppingstall was born in Deniliquin, NSW but was working as a Farmer in Alfredton via Ballarat, Victoria when he enlisted in the 23rd Battalion, A Company on 11 February 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 10 May 1915. He served at Gallipoli until the general evacuation in December 1915. In March 1916 he moved to France where, on July 28th, he was wounded in action. He sustained a serious shrapnel wound to his left ankle which left him with a fractured tibia. He was evacuated to England and once recovered, in May 1917, he was transferred to the Anzac Provost Corps. After the war he returned to Australia on the Bahia Castillo, reaching Melbourne on June 19th 1920.
