Percy Harry Hayes (SN 533) born in Ballarat, was a 24 year old railways fireman when he enlisted in Melbourne on December 30th 1916. On February 19th 1917 he embarked aboard the Ballarat and sailed to England then to France in May. He served predominantly with the 15th Australian Light Rail Operating Company and avoided serious illness or injury. When the war ended, he returned to Australia aboard the Konigin Luise, disembarked at Melbourne on August 13th 1919 and was discharged on September 20th.
