Biography

Thomas Paterson Veal (SN 2220) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Eureka Street State School. He was an 18 year old labourer from Barkly Street when he enlisted on February 23rd 1915. He was allocated to the 14th Infantry Battalion and embarked for active service on June 17th. He served at Gallipoli from early August 1915 but after just two weeks a gunshot wound to the arm forced his evacuation. After Gallipoli he was transferred to the 46th Infantry Battalion with whom he served in France. On November 1st 1918 he died of broncho-pneumonia (Spanish flu). He is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
