Biography

Charles Leslie Bedford (SN 509) was born in Geelong, but living in Peel Street Ballarat and working as a butcher, when he enlisted February 22nd 1915. He embarked from Melbourne aboard the Euripides on May 10th to serve with the 23rd Battalion at Gallipoli. Illness forced his evacuation to the UK Hospital Ship Formosa. He was diagnosed with tonsillitis, but his condition worsened and while the ship was between Gallipoli and Malta he died on 13th October 1915. He was buried at sea and commemorated on the Australian Memorial at Lone Pine.
