Thomas Francis Walsh was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a labourer when he enlisted with the C Company 23rd Battalion, 6th Infantry Brigade on 12 February 1915. According to his digitised service record he had some issues with authority, including being absent without leave, entering town without a pass and æinterfering with the police'. Whist in Rouen, France, he was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the buttock and also suffering bronchial pneumonia. He was invalided to England and later was discharged to Australia on 30 June 1918.
