Cecil Hopper (SN 52) born at Ballarat, was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 16th 1915. Assigned to the 22nd Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne on May 10th aboard the Ulysses and reached the battlefields of France in March 1916. In July he suffered a wound to his knee and shell shock and was evacuated to hospital in England. He recovered from his knee wound but a disease caused him to be hospitalised for several months. He rejoined his unit in France in October 1917. In September 1918 he was hospitalised suffering from neurasthenia. He was then granted special leave that enabled him to return home aboard the Burmah. He disembarked at Melbourne on January 29th 1919 and he was discharged on March 23rd.
