Biography

Daniel James Sweeney (SN 885) was born in Ballarat and attended Urquhart Street State School. He was unmarried, 24 years old and employed as a horse breaker when he enlisted on August 17th 1914. He joined the 5th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in October, on board the Orvieto. His time at Gallipoli was cut short when, in August 1915, a ‘septic arm’ caused his evacuation to Malta and then to England. He didn't rejoin his unit in France until August the following year, but was killed in action near Flers on December 7th 1916. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
